Lifeguard teams in San Diego and Imperial Counties are pooling their rescue skills in hopes of winning the 2008 Lifeguard Games. Sponsored by the local American Red Cross with the generous support of Edward Jones of Bonsall, the competition takes place Saturday, August 2, from 4:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m., at theCarlsbad Community Swim Complex, 3401 Monroe Street, Carlsbad. Competitions will begin at 5:00 p.m.

The American Red Cross responded to a house fire today on Van Houten Ave., in El Cajon, dispatching disaster workers to care for affected family members and to provide canteen services for several dozen emergency personnel on scene.

While deployed to the Three Rivers Area Fires, San Diego volunteer Durand concentrated her efforts on mentoring less experienced volunteers in the important details of disaster response sheltering and feeding. Often these volunteers are surprised to learn the age of the energetic and enthusiastic volunteer.

Amateur radio operators with the San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross joined thousands of operators nationwide demonstrating their skills and emergency capabilities this weekend during the annual “Field Day” exercise.

Business and community leaders have been selected as members of the 2008-09 Board of Directors of the San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross. The slate was formally nominated and voted on by the membership at the Chapter’s Annual Meeting on Wednesday, June 25, at 12:30 p.m. at the Red Cross Chapter Headquarters, 3950 Calle Fortunada in Kearny Mesa.
